Excerpts
From
Kissing the Monster
by: Andre Courtemanche
|
| The
concept of perceived risk vs. actual risk is not
relevant to a person suspended fifty feet in the air.
There
I was at the Teen Health Centre's new Challenges for
Success Ropes Course being trained to lead people of all
ages through the 30 acre forest filled with exciting and
formidable tasks. The group of THC employees I was a
part of was a special one. Through four days of rigorous
training, we had all learned a lot about trust and
confronting fear, and now it was time for me to put the
new lessons to use. Secured to the giant swing, the
group hoisted me higher and higher as my adrenaline went
into overdrive...
My
group pulled the rope I was fastened to, causing me to
rise toward the top of a giant tree. We had inspected my
harness, we had inspected the ropes, there was really
nothing to worry about... I couldn't help but remember
the story we were told about a young girl finding the
courage to kiss a hideous monster and finding out the
monster was nothing to fear at all.
As I
reached the peak of the swings' height, I know how she
felt. I may have yelled when the swing released, but
what I remember the most was the wind. The glorious
winds of change blowing through the helmet of a man
kissing away his fears.
"I
pushed myself to achieve things I thought I couldn't
do." |
WHAT IS A ROPES COURSE?
The Challenges for Success Ropes Course is set within a 30 acre
Carolinian forest at the
Chelsea Spa and Retreat, located half an
hour outside of Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
A Ropes course is a series of elements made of ropes, wood and cables. The Program
involves supervised challenges that promote group and individual
achievement.
The
Challenges for Success Ropes Course offers an original approach
to team building, personal growth and leadership skills
training. Through a series of activities, initiatives and
challenges, facilitators work with you and your group to explore
and develop communication skills, leadership, trust,
cooperation, goal-setting, and problem-solving skills. Our
clients participate directly and experientially in programs
designed to work on their specific areas of interest. These new
ideas and insights will be transferred back to their working and
personal relationships.
